I'm quite certain you needn't be overly worried about thickness but the optical quality of the material from which the lens is made can definitely make a difference.

are you sure that the 4mm fresnel is not a dual focus fresnel? thats the only ones I have seen that are 4mm thick (what some overheads use, the original meaning of "splitting fresnels" I believe was when the 2 conjoined fresnels were actually split in two, but that could be urban legend too :) )

Interesting. How are they joined? Can they be cut? Are they a hassle to work with? It would eliminate the alignment problem some have - right? Of course, you can't go with a split design if they are permanently stuck together.

not sure, I think they are "welded" at the edges(the old ones anyway), the problem being that they were meant for overheads which means generally 10x10 0r 11.25x11,25 stages.... maybe some of the "old folks" around here would know....

They are welded at the adges together. That why they are 4 mm. thickness, and it's easy to separate them by sharp knife, or cutting around the adges. :)

The biggest change being analog to digital. I currently refurbish copiers for a rather large dealer on the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Lenses used in modern digital copiers are not suitable for diy PJs. They are only 13mm in diameter, including the housing, and have an extremely short focal length!

Yes, they are commonly used in overhead projectors (I have a set that is 220/330mm.) And, yes, they are a little too small to use with a 15 inch lcd.
