Well, I've finished my initial build of my 15" projector using the Techbench Samsung LCD. Boy have I learned a lot along the way. Knowing what I know now I'm ready to start building the box all over. I made my box out of plywood using a circular saw.
Lessons learned:
Precision is important. Lens/LCD alignment was complicated by my less then precise cuts.
Plywood slinters and makes it hard to get precise holes.
Using the standard horizonal design does not fit well in the room.
I've decided to start over and build a completly new box. I'm also going to size it so I can retrofit it with a 17" LCD later and incorporate the zoom optics.
So, finally, my question is what are the typical dimensions of a stripped 17" monitor? I want to make sure I have enough room for future upgrades.

Ok there's an formula I made to easily determine the panel size. This does not take into account any added circuitry, framing etc. For any 4:3 panel or screen size you can take the diagonal and:
Divide the diagonal by 1.25 for the width and 1.666666666667 for the height
And for 16:9 you can:
Divide the diagonal by 1.147375 for the width and 2.039777777777778 for the height.
