The simple answer is "maybe".

What type of cable is it actually? Do you have a picture?
Many LVDS/TTL panel cables have, on the controller/scaler/AD board end a rather standard connector that could easily be extended. These use a connector similar to a IDE header connector, with standard pin spacing.
Still others use other connectors for which extensions can be purchased through various parts suppliers like Digikey or Mouser.
Others use HiRose type connectors similar to the panel end, and could not likely be extended very easily

So, it depends upon what your cable actually is.

In reality, almost anything is possible.

I guess I am asking if it is OK electrically to do it.

i have a standard dual row header on the one end
and the lcd connector on the other.

I an now going to try an IDE cable cut down though, as that my be the way to go as long as the ends are 1-1 which i will have to check

thanks!!

The easiest way would be like you said to use an IDE cable. Cut the Lvds wires in the middle ONE AT A TIME. Put on a small piece of heat shrink tubing.. Solder in the IDE cable. The use a hair dryer to shrink the tubing. Only 52 times you'll have to solder and shrink :)

It's not actually nearly as complicated as it seems. The general idea is to throw some lenses and a stripped LCD panel in a box with a bright light.

Well an IDE cable is 1:1 if you flip the connector over, i am hoping the IDE cable will just plug in and work. I rigged up a header today and it physically fits at least

Electrically, there shouldn't be a problem with extending the cable for the 10.6" panel as long as we're not talking about massive distances. An extra foot shouldn't hurt anything as long as the connections are solid.

10.6" No HTPC projector project has started.
Status: MST controller is installed. Panel strip finished.
Oh the joy of HD! Now on to forever tweaking!

On my 17" Dell 1707 I had to extend the wires (I think it was a bundle of 8 seperate wires) I added 8" to them without any problems. I cut one wire at a time, soldered it and slipped heat-shrink tubing over the soldered joint and so on.....it made for a neat job!
Go for it.
If you want I can post a foto of it. :)
