I was wondering if I could use my computer covers for a mat to strip my 512N on. They are vinel and I think think supposed to be anti static. Hower I rubbed my hair on it and held it above my head and I could feel my hair pulling towards it.

Does this mean its not anti static? Or do anti static mats absorb static or whatever? I don't know

Meanwhile as far as getting rid of my own static, haven't had much luck finding anti static wrist bands or mats, and to tell you the truth I don't feel like spending money on them if it can be avoided. Couldn't I tie a wire to my foot and run it into the bathtub? :P

Or something like that that?

Are the lcd circuitry boards just as sensitive as computer componants? Because I've changed video cards and put RAM in my comp before with no anti static equipment and nothing went wrong. I just was told by a computer guru that a good idea is to put your hand on an electrical outlet to discharge your static. Not sure if thats true but never had any pc trouble.

Radio Shack has them for like $20 or $25 dollars (mat and strap together). You may not feel like spending money on them, but do ou feel like buying a new LCD. Just look at all the threads of people who have ruined their LCD's due to static.

No, your vinel covers will not work. An anti-static mat and wrist strap get plugged into an outlet to ground them and remove the static.

Yes you can just touch metal that is grounded, or touch an electrical outlet approx every 5 minutes, although this is cerrtainly not as safe.

I really wouldn't try touching electrical sockets directly to remove static build up. Better to fry your panel than your body.

Cotton doesn't hold static. You could strip it on a cotton sheet, but make sure it's 100% cotton as Nylon does hold static rather well. As for tying a wire round your foot that's not a bad idea, only I'd connect it to your wrist and the other end to a part of the bare metal of your pc case/frame. MAKE SURE YOUR PC ISN'T SWITCHED ON. As long as the power cord is plugged in you'll be grounded. This method works for me using a proper anti-static wrist strap (which is only really a fancy metal wire anyway) connected to my pc cases frame. I am in the UK though where we can switch power on and off at the wall sockets and we have 3 pin plugs with earth/ground wires in. If you only have 2 pin plugs in the USA and no wall switch forget everything I just said. I'm so ignorant. :D

Wrist strap always a good idea... and you don't need the mat, just attach it to some piece of grounded metal (i use my metal lamp) This of course is not "necessary", but it just a precaution.

If possible work in a room with a wood or concrete floor. Try to avoid working in rooms with a rug or carpeted surface. Don't shuffle your feet or roll in a chair back and forth over a carpet just before touching electronics as this will create a static charge. Avoid working in a dry climates with a low dew points. (strange to say but working in a warm humid room you are less likely to achieve a static charge than working in an air conditioned room) Touch a grounded metal part before putting your hand near any electronics.

IMHO, a wrist strap is a good (cheap) investment. (about $3-4)

Good Luck !

Not that I would do it, but you will nto fry yourself by touching the outside of an electrical outlet.

That would be touch the screw in the center that holds on the plate and only if the outlet is wired properly.

I think I'm going to attach a wire to my foot and connect it to the copper pipes in my basement. Those pipes contain water so if that doesn't ground me, nothing will.

Sounds funny, but it's actually a great grounding method. Just be sure there is bare wire touching your skin. The pipes in a home *should* be connected to the main ground that is used in the electrical panel of the home. The water has little or nothing to do with the pipes ability to ground as copper is much more highly conductive... any electrical current will travel through the pipe before the water that it's carrying.

Finished stripping my lcd. :D Worked fine, no problems whatsoever. Go to the public discussion forum for pics if you want.
