What is a general experience with this material, is this a sufficient UV protector or do I need a UV filter on top of that? Also does it filter UV if installed other way around? The reason I’m asking is that while I was pealing off the last protector accidentally I dropped it and I’m not sure which side is which. I hope that the worst case scenario would be a discolored Lexan.

Unfortunatly the worst case scenario is a toasted LCD. Lexan by itself is a good enough protector of UV, but it needs to be installed the right way round (I believe).

Maybe some bright spark here knows a way to find out which is which?

This has been discussed before. There is no way to tell which side is which if you hadn't marked it. You get a 50-50 change of getting it right. If the lexan is in backward you will get discoloration (over some time period), if it is mounted correctly you won't. Either way you still get the UV protection. I wouldn't worry too much about it... only a $5 piece in the big scheme of things if you get it backwards.

Yes, GadgetSmith is absolutely correct, I was talking out of my arse. It will not affect the LCD but just the sheet of Lexan itself.

Well I called GE about Lexan XL10 and I was told that it contains UV inhibitor through out the material plus extra coating on one side to protect it from yellowing. I was told that it will filter ~ 80 to 90 % of UV even if installed other way around. I guess that should be more then enough.

If it is the wrong way round, the UV will be absorbed by the Lexan instead of the UV filter stuck to the side of it, and this yellows the Lexan over time. But yes, it will protect the rest of the setup regardless of which way round it is.

Ok, so which side of the lexan should face the lamp? The side that has the white protective film with instructions or the side with the green protective film?

I got my lexan used... So it doesn't have any protective coating on it anymore. Is there a way to tell which way is which?? Or do I have to go buy some more @ home depot?

I believe you can't tell BUT look at both sides askance. If one looks like it's a funny color or anything odd assume THAT side has the UV blocker. It's a crap shoot either way and it'll still function but if it's in wrong the polycarbonate will discolor over time and THEN you can buy new stuff.

the polycarbonate being the non uv protectant side, right? And what color is it gonna turn? So I'll know what's happening when my screen starts turning _____.
