micRo Desktop CNC
Description
Meet micRo: Lumenlab’s desktop CNC robot kit. micRo is an awesome tool for any home-hobbyist and building it yourself is a great educational experience. When you’re done you get a 10″ x 12″ x 2-4″ working space. You can use micRo to mill, drill, cut, draw and more using tools you create.
CNC (computer numerical control) is the use of a computer to control a machine tool. CNC has made it easy to create precise curves and complex 3D structures which would be difficult to produce by hand. CNC has been around since the 1950s but is only recently becoming accessible to the home-hobbyist.
Lumenlab’s micRo kit and companion site will guide you through building your own CNC robot and creating your own projects with CAD, CAM and EMC2.
Imagine what you can do with such a powerful tool.
- RC projects: model planes, cars, boats
- robotics projects: make parts for your hexapod robot
- wood-carving
- fashion and home decorating: print on tshirts and fabrics, cut patterns
- sign making: cut vinyl, wood and more
- circuit boards: highly accurate pick and place
- A/V components: speaker cases, DIY projector cases, rack panels
- art: air-brush, paint, sculpt - make a multi-paneled mural
- manufacture: manufacture components for larger CNC robots (like RoGR)
- mould-making: make moulds for casting
- deposition-printing
- jewelery: dremel intricate patterns
Education
This makes a great project for grade school through college. Suitable for studies in robotics, mechanics, computer-science, machining, engineering and manufacturing. Spend 1 part of the class building the micRo and another using it. Contact Lumenlab for educational discounts and lesson guides.
